What do watts, kW, Wh, kWh, VA and Ah mean?
- Watt (W) and kilowatt (kW)
- How much power an appliance uses at any moment. 1 kW is 1,000 W.
- Watt-hour (Wh) and kilowatt-hour (kWh)
- Energy used over time. A 100 W TV running 3 hours uses 300 Wh. One kWh is one "unit" on your electricity bill.
- Volt-ampere (VA)
- The size rating of an inverter or UPS. It is higher than watts because of the power factor, so a 1,000 VA unit does not run 1,000 W.
- Ampere-hour (Ah)
- How much charge a battery holds. It only means something with voltage: Wh = volts × Ah.
- Starting (surge) power
- Motors, fridges and pumps need extra power for a second or two when they start.
